"Help! I'm Missing My 'Eye'!"

When your 2 1/2 year old yells from another room that her "eye" is missing, it may cause immediate panic...

But as you turn the corner you realize it wasn't the crisis you thought.

"Thank goodness!!! I thought you meant your actual EYE."
:::Blank stare:::
"Oh, nevermind."

Most people would agree that it can be easy to invent scenarios to worry about, and sometimes a crisis averted is like a hammock for our hearts.

I expect royalties from the sales of any Hallmark cards bearing that statement.

I've come to notice that just one or two things going wrong can easily "ruin" a day, when we haven't focused on the other million things that went right, like not getting in a wreck, knowing that all your family is safe, healthy, and accounted for, and not being the victim of identity theft.

But as my Dad always says, "Must catastrophe be the alternative to a good day?"

When you're a kid and receive $5 in a Birthday card, the Heavens open up with possibilities...until reality sets in during adulthood and every time you turn around, expenses pile up.

Take, for example, heating and cooling units.  Why are earth are they so expensive, and wouldn't a block of ice and fan be just as effective?  Besides, for the price of two units you could be happily engaged to the person of your dreams.

"I know the cut and clarity aren't what you dreamed, but check out that efficiency rating!"
"IT'S OVER."
"But I'm your number one FAN, get it?"
:::silence:::

On second hand, maybe not.  But the more advanced we get, the more difficulties arise.  Sometimes it's best to just keep things simple, like our recent family outing to celebrate Uncle David's Birthday.  We had a great time!

One of Emerson's teachers braided her hair like the Wendy's girl, and I LOVED it!!!  Why can't she sit still that long for me?!

That evening Poppy and Emerson played ball in the front yard, and Emerson threw it as hard as she could down the steep incline that is our street, sending Poppy on a wild goose chase to retrieve it before it got lost in a neighbor's yard.  He was running at Cheetah speed as his pants were falling down.  If I had gotten a video of this we could all retire, because it would be everywhere.

My cousin Caroline is expecting her first baby, and we had a great time catching up with her and her sister, Laura.  Every detail was perfect!

Sweet Claire let Emerson play with all of her dolls and toys.

She was also amazed with the guests' dogs.

HOW precious are Claire and Emerson?!?

And those SUGAR cookies!  I devoured mine before I was out of Laura's subdivision.

One of my best friends in the world, Joy, turned 31 last weekend.  I had been looking forward to celebrating with her for a while.  A relaxing day!??  What does that even mean?!

Dorothy and I had such fun riding together to Greenville, and fortunately we were able to coordinate a lunch date with Jamie, Karen, and Eden, as well.  I've said it before, and I'll said it again: to have so many of your friends or family in the same place at the same time is one of life's greatest blessings of which you never want to let go.

These girls have been in my core group of friends for FOREVER, and I wouldn't trade them for the world.

Look at this gem!

Things I love about this picture: bangs, accessories, the background geometry shapes, and the marker on Dorothy's hand that likely says, "I love Dorothy" with the pages of our homework assignment written next to it.

...Down memory lane we kept trucking!  I was ecstatic to meet Rachael and Bryan's new son, Benjamin that afternoon.  WHAT a sweetie!  I could have cuddled this precious boy all day, and I was so, so happy to see and visit with them.

Look at those little features and fist!  :::swoon:::

Suffice it to say that Eden and Benjamin were quite smitten with each other!

Future middle school dance...

While all this fun was taking place I got a picture text from my Mom (an accomplishment in itself) of Emerson exercising with Poppy.  Priceless!

Unfortunately, Emerson developed a cough and ear infection this week that turned into many nights of little to no sleep and me taking her to daycare sporting an Einstein 'do.

Where am I?
Who am I??
What day is it??
WHAT'S A SHOWER?!?!?

This resulted in me caving in and putting her in our bed a few times at night.  WHY is this statement so true, and how can such a tiny body take up so much room?

So we headed to the doctor's office this week for a visit, and as always, Emerson will meet a friend in a heartbeat.

Within a minute, these two were playing chase with each other around the waiting room.

"And this is the sick patient area?!?"

When she hasn't been coughing her head off or complaining about her ear (poor baby) she has thoroughly enjoyed Face-timing cousin Harper, whom she affectionately calls, "Hopper."  It's the sweetest thing.

At the end of the day, you've just gotta focus on the more important and positive things in life, like this...

And playing with sparklers is sure to brighten your day!

Emerson's new saying  -and I don't know where she got it- is this:  "It's not gonna rain, Mommy.  It's sunny today."

One thing is for sure; this ray of sunshine was Heaven sent, and every day is sunny with her!

The good thing about rain is that it almost gives us something new afterwards...a clean slate. My parents bought a Honda Odyssey in 2004 and were in hog Heaven.  In fact, I'm fairly certain that they would scoff at the thought of a Maserati.  Although, to this day my Dad still has trouble operating the remote and controls to their van, and he has a talent for making the smallest tasks infinitely more difficult than necessary.

We had many good times in this vehicle.  It helped move me no less than NINE times to and from college and other various places.  We've taken many family trips in it, had some arguments, and it was just a jolly Carlson caravan for a good long while.

But car years are like dog years, and it had just gotten old.

"Bluetooth?!?  I thought you said bacon and fruit."

For one thing, my parents had taken it to numerous repair shops, and they were never able to find someone who could stop the brakes from making a whistling, steamboat noise when pressed.

"Your ride is here!"

So they took the plunge and bought the latest model, and I anxiously called them later that day to see what they thought of it.

My Dad, as usual, stifling no feelings: "I HATE IT!"
Me: "Why"?
"There are too many bells and whistles, a push-button start, and trying to turn on the radio is like navigating a NASA cockpit.  I want a 1974 sedan."

Have you ever had a moment where you needed to keep a straight face but were laughing so hard on the inside? This was one of those moments.  My Dad was not joking.  He's the only person on the planet that goes into Verizon and asks for a 'downgrade.'

After almost two weeks with their new van, he said it had moved up to a C+ rating, but seeing his eyes dart when he tries to do something as simple as turn on the air still amuses me.  I appropriately named the new van "Margo" after the snooty, modern couple next door in the National Lampoon's Christmas movie. If you get the reference, I'll take you for a spin.  Just bring your engineering diploma.

Emerson calls it the "Monster car," because they happened to have a Monsters Inc. DVD playing, and now that's the first thing she asks for while getting in.  It seems pretty fitting, after all, because technology can be scary.

As they were driving the van home the first day they saw something very strange while on the interstate.  In one of the cameras there was a fluttering bird stuck to the car.  Poor guy; he was trying his best to hang on during the high speed winds and aced his audition for that meteorologist job.

In an effort to save the little thing they tried to figure out where he was located.

"WHERE IS THE CAMERA, ANN?!"
"I DON'T KNOW, RANDY."
"LOOK IN THE MANUAL!"
"THERE IS NO MANUAL. IT'S ALL ONLINE! AHHHHH!!!!"

They ended up stopping at another Honda place to un-ruffle the feathers.  Yikes.  Let's just say that Tweety Bird is singing sweetly with Jesus now.

So just when you think you've had a bad day and can't bear it, always remember this one piece of timeless advice: being stuck to the back of a car is definitely for the birds.

A Sand-sational Vacation!

Vacation 2016 is in the books and was the best yet, so grab a lounge chair and enjoy!

PS...You do not need sunscreen for this activity.

I intend to take this picture of us every year.  My little girl will never be too big for my arms.  She will, however, tower over me at some point in the near future.  Maybe by kindergarten.

One of the greatest things I packed (aside from enough outfits to clothe everyone in this picture...)

was a beach-themed Sands Alive kit.  A what?!

Whoever invented this is a genius.  It's foam that looks and feels exactly like sand but is (mostly) mess free.  Kids will spend hours molding mermaids, fish, and seashells...every possible chance they get.

"WANNA BUILD A SAND CASTLE, MOM???"

One major plus this year is that we had a beach house all to ourselves.  Our private community also had indoor and outdoor pools, an awesome splash pad, a really nice playground, and...our newest obsession...OUR VERY OWN GOLF CART!!!

Ok, I admit it.  I've been that driver before who has gotten behind a golf cart on a main road while in a hurry and been really irritated.  OUT OF MY WAY...AHHH!!  But the moment I set foot on the gas pedal, all my preconceived notions about this device were changed.

It is so. much. FUN!  With the wind (and sand) in your hair, you just feel on top of the world.

Leo after a test spin in his first golf cart.

I wonder if UPS drivers feel the same excitement when they ride with their doors open on the interstate.  Who knows.  But we soon began looking online to check out golf cart prices, and let's just say they were slightly higher than Emerson's Minnie Mouse car.

Well, this seems like an affordable option.

So maybe one day we will ride in a cart of our own...perhaps from the church to Emerson's wedding reception.  And my justification will be that it's cheaper than a horse and carriage.

"Honey, I know it may not be exactly what you envisioned, but aren't you and your husband going on a cruise, anyway?"

In any event, I got THIS look when I told her that she couldn't drive it by herself...

The first day we enjoyed the beach with Ryan's parents and realized that we would never again go to the ocean in the heat of the afternoon.

Sweltering heat and wind are not a good combination.

But sometimes you've just gotta look past the cons and focus on everything good, like Tropical Sno icees.  These became my latest craze.

After we dried off like wet dogs we found an arcade and picnic area with music playing, and Emerson danced her heart out.

Then we had lunch at Cookout, and halfway during the meal Emerson pointed to the guy at the table behind us and said, "Uncle Jay!"  The resemblance is striking.  That was so sweet of her.  Jay is always with us in one form or another.

Our next stroll to the beach was in the evening, and it was much more doable!

We also - adults included- had lots of fun at the playground.

We loved going back to our house each evening.  It really was nice, but I noticed something strange in the laundry room the first time we washed a load of towels.  The spin cycle was so loud that it almost shook the entire house and sounded like a tornado.  And that gave me an idea...

I called my entire family into the laundry room for an important announcement.  I then held up a fake microphone and yelled above the noise, "I'M REPORTING LIVE FROM SOUTH CAROLINA IN WHAT YOU CAN SEE ARE HURRICANE FORCE WINDS.  THIS IS SERIOUS, FOLKS.  SEEK SHELTER IMMEDIATELY!!!" My parents died laughing; Ryan just shook his head.

Next up was a trip to Wild Water & Wheels; a MUST for kids!  Here's a look at last year vs this year.

I'm ready for my sun "scween!"

I'm not sure who had more fun riding the animals: Emerson or Poppy.  But the water felt GREAT!

Afterwards we were so tired that we could barely open our eyes.

The next day was July 4th, and we kicked it off at the Fun Warehouse.  It was a BLAST!  Ryan and I raced go karts (he won, for the record), and we actually went roller skating for the first time in well over a decade.

Emerson also had an entire room of inflatables to herself and as usual, made a friend! This place was SO cheap, too, and the staff were awesome!  It was definitely one of the best things we did.

When coordination calls.

That evening Sharon and Chris hosted a WONDERFUL 4th of July cookout.  They are excellent hosts, and we had a fabulous time!

Emerson and Madeline had a ball together popping bubbles and running around.

Look at the difference from last year!

Madeline had a huge stuffed turtle from Ripleys, identical to the smaller one we bought during Emerson's first beach trip.  I recognized it immediately.  How is it that I can remember details such as this but never where I put my keys or purse?!

The hotdogs and burgers they cooked that night were delicious, and to top it off, Ryan had given me specific instructions to order cake from a place called Coccadott's: marble cake with buttercream icing and caramel icing in the center.

When we picked it up we could hardly believe our eyes.  It was complete perfection!  Seriously...some of the best cake I've ever had in my life.

#CakeByTheOcean

I was sunburned and skipped out on the pool, but everyone else loved it!

We also really enjoyed visiting with our friends and catching up.

At 10:15 we watched the fireworks, and the kids enjoyed every minute!  Carter and Emerson were so sweet.

The next day we had a great dinner at King Street Cafe, followed by a Broadway at the Beach trip.

This was the first time Emerson rode a ride all by herself without prompting AND thoroughly enjoyed it.  She rang that bell every time she came around.

Look at this resemblance to Ryan on a similar ride when he was little!

And now for a 2014, 2015, and 2016 comparison on the carousel.  You can see that she has gotten much more comfortable with it as time goes by.

Picture 1 = No way, Jose!
Picture 2 = Hanging on to Mama for dear life
Picture 3 = Smiling and waving to our family like Miss America

The next morning we headed to Ripley's aquarium because 1) Emerson loves fish and sea animals, and 2) Ripley's has good air conditioning.

This was our first trip with the sharks in 2014.

And then this year...

We also played a family game ofputt-putt.  She kept an inventory of the color of everyone's golf ball, and we were only allowed to play with the color that was assigned to us.

Red, Brown, Yellow, Black & White...this won't go down without a fight.

She is very athletic and really did love it.

Almost all of us got a hole in one at some point, myself included!

I foresee a Sports Scholarship in Emerson's future.  She whacked the hang out of the golf ball.

Another fun-filled evening at the beach followed.

Nothing will wipe that smile away!

We also took a trip to the pier where we saw Jaws himself.  I've always wanted to yell "SHARK!!!!" in a crowded area so that chaos would ensue, but I didn't have the heart to cause pandemonium during others' vacation.  But when we spotted him from the pier there were people swimming within a slightly uncomfortable distance.

What you don't know won't hurt you...or will it?

In all seriousness, why are people so surprised to see sharks in the ocean!?  That's their home!  I don't freak out when I see a rooster on a farm, but then again...they don't have a massive set of teeth.

The next morning I did something that I've only done a couple of times in my life: see the ocean at sunrise.  It was breathtaking.

As if our vacation weren't packed enough, I was playing piano and singing for Cindy and Chad's wedding that weekend.  They are a very special couple with two awesome families!

And we also celebrated Trace's third Birthday super hero style!

THANK YOU to the amazing Shuttleworth family who bought all kinds of goodies and games for Emerson to enjoy over the weekend.  They are too wonderful for words!!!

Emerson had a blast with SuSu, Ellie, & "Darfy!"

So to sum up our vacation, it consisted of:

...drinking Yoo-Hoos on the beach

...loving beyond measure

...letting out our "inner kid"

...having a SPLASH!

...only having ONE mishap with the golf cart  ***Oops, Nana***

That's one way to pop the brake.

...searching for seashells on the seashore

...getting totally exhausted

..trying the new "loaded" Bloomin' Onion at Outback

Is it just me or do you see a ray of Heaven on our plate?

...going swimming in our PJs...just because

...and dancing away our cares!

Despite how messy we looked, we had an amazing time.  "I've got a money making idea," my Dad exclaimed at the end of our trip.

We all glanced at him in anticipation.  Certainly this idea didn't include technology?

"I'm going to cut off my wild beach hair and sell it to the Lion's Club for one of their broom fundraisers."

I think you call that "making 'do."
